Nn19 Digital Sampler Vst Download

There are some free samples with it but I use mainly SF.(until I get free AKAI samples). Also reads LM-4 kits - good although most of the free ones are not as good as some of my SFs. For the small price I paid I got a full DX7 synth (plus a simple analog synth) although I have an original hardware DX7 I use as a MIDI controller.

While the NN-19 sampler has been around for quite sometime, I have to explain what this sampler does and how it works. Simply because there seems to be some 'mis-understanding' about samplers and audio in general in Reason. The concept of the NN-19 sampler is a basic sampler player that house one or more samples in one sample player. There is in this case a relationship between the note it is played back, the speed of the playback and the pitch that you get in return (Keyboard Tracking). This usually means that a higher pitch results in to a shorter playback time. While lowering the pitch results in to a lower playback time.

The NN-19 sampler player is a classic one. It does not do any time stretching. Time stretching is a whole different technique compared to pitch up / down sampling.

The weak points of the NN-19

  • splitting the keyboard range (for different samples recorded on different octaves) is quite a tedious process in this sampler
  • there is no internal layering for this one
  • time stretching is not an option

I am not writing these points down to say that the NN-19 sucks by the way (as this would be the interpretation of some company which I will not refer to in this article). I am pointing out these weak points because in some cases this sampler may not be the proper tool to get the proper stuff going at that given moment.

For layering and splitting keys, the better tool in this case would be the NN-XT. Since at some extend you could call it the big brother of the NN-19 sampler. However, there are issues that the NN-XT kind of has which are 'solved' in the NN-19 sampler. Hence I shall list the strong points while doing this:

The strong points of the NN-19 sampler

Digital
  • almost every setting can be altered using edit automation. This includes envelopes, filters and for instance the sample start knob
  • all these settings are also available inside the combinator programmer section
  • it is an easy access tool to use one sample and play it.
  • can easy be tweaked because all the settings are on display

While a lot of people will try to compare the NN-19 with a thing like 'Kontakt'. Here is a message: please don't. Kontakt (the VST made by Native instruments) and the NN-19 are two different things. While the NN-19 is a basic sampler editor to get stuff done fast, Kontakt is often used to do more complicated stuff (like layering different samples and make huge libraries out of them).

The NN-19 shines from my perspective while using at as percussion player (bass drum, snare drum etc). At some extend you could see this as an advanced redrum drum computer, while only playing one channel. However if you stack this inside a combinator you can easy turn an NN-19 in to a redrum drum computer. Since that one is based on the same concept and idea.

Sometimes I use a redrum drum computer per percussion element. Sometimes I use the NN-19 as a replacement to get this done (because of the amount of control). These are different tools to get the job done more or less.

Just to add some clarity to the ideas I have talking about in the few above paragraphs regarding the usage of the NN-19 sampler, I made a video tutorial about some basic functions that most people might not know that it exists.
